Eight of the best films from one of France's greatest directors. Known as "the French Hitchcock", Chabrol (1930 - 2010) was mostly esteemed for his thrillers and murder mysteries. He was one of the most prolific directors of all time, completing about 70 films 1958 - 2009

A member of the French New Wave (nouvelle vague) group of filmmakers who first came to prominence at the end of the 1950s with Jean-Luc Godard, François Truffaut, Éric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette.

Chabrol's career began with Le Beau Serge (1958), inspired by Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt (1943). Thrillers became something of a trademark for Chabrol, with an approach characterized by a distanced objectivity. This is especially apparent in Les Biches (1968), La Femme infidèle (1969), and Le Boucher (1970) – all featuring Stéphane Audran, who was his wife at the time.

Almost all the films in this box-set date from Claude Chabrol's great period (late 1960s/early 1970s), when he seemed to come up with one terrific movie after another. The one other film in the box-set is the only one which can't be classed as a thriller, and which dates from much later in Chabrol's career - his early-1990s version of "Madame Bovary", with Isabelle Huppert which is a thoroughly satisfying version of a literary classic, rather more successful than the Hollywood version of 1949 directed by Vincente Minnelli. There isn't a dud in the whole octet.
