Description

Antique Victorian Pewter Ewer/Hot Water Jug With Hinged Lid & Stag Antler Handle C1890

The patina is wonderful

Used, in good antique condition with a tiny dent/scratch, as shown in my photos.

This is fantastic genuine antique pewter, with a lot of history & character

If you like items to be "as new", this item, unfortunately, will not be right for you

Height 24cm

Base 9.5cm

I have given it a quick wipe-over, but as with all my items I don't over-clean or polish

As some customers, especially prop buyers, prefer an original patina

So I leave the decision to polish to you

Due to age there may be the odd age related wear/mark

James Dixon & Sons, founded 1806 in Sheffield, was one of the major British manufacturers of the Industrial Revolution

They were manufacturers of pewterware, electroplated Britannia metal, silverware & electroplated nickel silver

Their products included 100s of items for use in the kitchen & the dining room (e.g. tea services, cocktail shakers & mixers) as well as items such as candlesticks

They were a world leader in manufacturing shooting accessories through 19th Cent & exported powder flasks in large quantities to USA

They were known as whistle makers, which like most of their products were of outstanding quality they were one of the 4 great whistle makers

A wine ewer is a large jug that has a deep, tall bowl on a stemmed base, & has a single vertical scrolling handle

The bowl of the wine ewer is sometimes of ovoid shape with a narrow neck, but is typically cylindrical, helmet-shaped, or baluster-shaped

Historically Ewers were used for washing fingers with rose water at the dinner table. A server would hold a basin in front of each dinner guest, while another would use the ewer to pour rose water over the hands of the dinner guest

The silver wine ewer was first introduced in the late 17th Cent

In the Georgian era they became water jugs, before gradually taking on a more elaborate purpose – to serve wine
