Description
Sikes’ Hydrometer by Joseph Long of London. All brass weights and measures included. Mahogany box, inlaid with what looks like the ivory plate of the importer Rosenfeld, Stein & Co Johannesburg
For measuring the alcoholic proof of liquids the Sike’s Hydrometer was in use from 1816 to 1952.
This beauty was picked up in the Capetown wine region before all the Brits went down and lifted all the antiques from that out of there in the late 1990s.
Made at Joseph Long’s famous premises at 43 Eastcheap, EC3, in the City of London. Joseph Long was a world famous maker of mathematical, optical and hydrometer instrument maker on these premises from 1885 till 1936. Exported all over the world , this was imported into South Africa and used in the Wine and Brandy production in Capetown for many years.
