Description

I found this 40+ years ago in a box of WW1 militaria, that had belonged to a Kiwi Gallipoli veteran (One whose details I no longer recollect at 64 years of age)

A very KIND TradeMe member has advised that this is NOT a Silver coin <snip> Hi Phillip, 1 guerche/kurus/piastre, AH1327 yr 6 so 1914-15. If it's roughly the size of a shilling it's cupro-nickel. The silver versions were much smaller, around 3d size. <snip>

Many THANKS Martin :-)

This VERY WELL COULD be a Gallipoli bring-back souvenir but I do not have any specific provenance to that effect

There were NOT that many places where Kiwis and Johhny Turk were together in WW1 and given that it was in a wallet of a Kiwi ANZAC veteran, So on the balance of probabilities? It MOST PROBABLY WAS a Gallipoli bring-back souvenir .......and was likely much shinier in those times

Possibly a FINE ADDITION to any WW1 Gallipoli display

If it could TALK? (It never will) It would probably only tell lies :-(

I will NEED to REMOVE the one bid placed to emend my description. I trust retrocollector will feel that was justified. 🙁 phillipjames (8990) • Saturday, 27 April 2024
  • Hey. It is 1 kurus (Egypt) 1909 CuNi v********m (41)10:32 pm, Sat, 27 Apr Thanks for advising, although it would appear to conflict with the previous ID. I guess back then Egypt was possibly part of the Ottoman Empire? (I did think the British had their paws on Egypt at that time?) phillipjames (8990) • Saturday, 27 April 2024
  • Yes, Egypt - part of the Ottoman Empire but with its own coinage. The "start date" is 1909 as your second correspondent says, but it's year 6 of the reign, so 1914-15 as per my original msg :-) t**********d (2346)07:57 pm, Sat, 4 May Many thanks for that further confirmation Martin 🙂 phillipjames (8990) • Saturday, 4 May 2024
  • An INTERESTING and AMUSING (to me anyway!!) "update" about the writing on this coin......""it was struck in Birmingham, despite saying "Struck in Egypt" in Arabic immediately above!" MANY thanks for that further infirmation Martin 🙂 Seller comment Sunday, 5 May 2024
