Description

Elizabethan milled Sixpence dated 1562. Obverse: tall narrow bust of Elizabeth I with plain dress and elaborate crown, larger rose behind her head. Star mint mark. Legend reads: ‘ELIZABETH · D · G · ANG · FRA · ET · HIB · REGINA’. Toothed edge. Reverse: shield of royal arms, quartered by a long cross fourchée which divides the date (1562) and the legend which reads: ‘POSVI | DEVMAD | IVTORE | M · MEVM’. Mint mark: star. Elizabeth succeeded her sister, Mary I, as queen of England in 1558. Early in her reign, as part of a recoinage effort, Elizabeth’s mint retained the services of Eloy Mestrelle, formerly an employee of the Paris mint. He was authorised to install minting machinery at the Tower Mint in 1560. A new milled coinage was authorised the following year.
