I bought this carving in New Guinea in 1970 and it originates from the Rabaul, New Britain area.

It is certainly a strange carving - I never saw anything faintly similar.

It is carved out of a single piece of wood, the carvers liked to use the roots of trees . It did split in the narrow piece at the top but you need to look closely to see the glued repair.

It is 400 mm high and 200 mm at its widest.

It is 'downsize' time for me so it is listed very reasonably for an old unique carving from a fascinating part of the world. A bargain for a genuine collector.
