Zircon is a natural forming stone over millions of years and is not to be confused with Cubic Zirconia (Cubic Zirconia – CZ - is zirconium dioxide a relatively hard man made synthetic mineral).

Zircon is the oldest known mineral on Earth. Considering that the Earth formed 4.56 billion years ago, the oldest zircon gemstones represent the earliest record of the Earth's crust. Zircon was the first crystal to form in molten granite as it cooled to form rock.

Zircon is an important gemstone of many colours, it is an historical gemstone used for thousands of years in jewellery. It is sometimes looked upon as a cheap Diamond simulant, but in actuality it can be a very valuable gem. Its colour diversity is caused by traces of certain impurities, some of which are radioactive.

Where is zircon found in the world?

Sri Lanka is the best-known source for green metamict 'low' zircon. Specimens are also found in Burma (Myanmar), and may possibly exist in other well-known zircon deposits in Cambodia. Most zircon deposits come from Burma, though Australia boasts the oldest deposits dating back more over 4.4 billion years.
