Description

The Gaucho is the South American cowboy.

The gaucho has long been a symbol of deep national pride for Argentina. Home to more than 150,000 gauchos, it is the only country that harbours their traditional wholesome lifestyle; nomadic horsemen wearing a uniform of boleros, ponchos and leather boots who answer only to the surrounding land.

And although they are not as predominant as they once were throughout the ‘Pampas’ of Argentina, their most prized possession was, and still remains today, his knife!

The Gauchos were known for never carrying a gun, only his ‘Cuchillo’ knife.

It was his only tool and used for everything; from cleaning his horses’ hooves, cutting his steak, even settling a disagreement.

Their knives were fondly referred to as 'The Peacemaker'!

Bolas or bolases (singular bola; from Spanish and Portuguese bola, "ball", also known as a boleadora or boleadeira) is a type of throwing weapon made of weights on the ends of interconnected cords, used to capture animals by entangling their legs. Bolas were most famously used by the gauchos, but have been found in excavations of Pre-Columbian settlements, especially in Patagonia, where indigenous peoples (particularly the Tehuelche) used them to catch 200-pound guanacos and rheas.
