Description
Guaranteed 100% GENUINE British Isles ROMAN OCCUPATION era RARE Bronze Brooch AKA "Fibula" BUT known as a "KNEE" Brooch for obvious reasons
Unusually retaining its original pin so it is COMPLETE however it is also a non-functional relic for collection or museum display only (The pin is "frozen" in place) & would likely fail (break!) if you attempted to operate it?
MOST "fibulae" are discovered by Detectorists WITHOUT their clasp mechanism, as the pin & spring either failed,? LOST in-wear, or they rotted-away
This is a BEAUTIFUL excavated RELIC found near the center of the British Roman City of Bath in Somerset, UK by a very good friend of mine WHO NEEDS a NEW (£8000.00) METAL DETECTOR
Roman Britain was the territory that became the Roman province of Britannia after the Roman conquest of Britain, consisting of a large part of the island of Great Britain
The Roman occupation lasted from AD 43 - AD 410
Julius Caesar invaded Britain in 55 & 54 BC as part of his Gallic Wars
According to Caesar, the Britons had been overrun or culturally assimilated by the Belgae during the British Iron Age & had been aiding Caesar's enemies
The Belgae were the only Celtic tribe to cross the sea into Britain, for to all other Celtic tribes this land was unknown
He received tribute, installed the friendly king Mandubracius over the Trinovantes, & returned to Gaul
A fibula is a brooch or pin for fastening garments, typically at the right shoulder
The fibula developed in a variety of shapes, but all were based on the safety-pin principle
Unlike most modern brooches, fibulae were not only decorative; they originally served a practical function: to fasten clothing for both sexes, such as dresses & cloak
In English, "fibula" is not a word used for modern jewelry, but by archaeologists, who also use "brooch", especially for types other than the ancient "safety pin" types, & for types from the British Isles
For Continental archaeologists, all metal jewelry clothes-fasteners are usually "fibulae"

Seller added 3 photos Seller comment Thursday, 28 March 2024 Hi. you appear to have 2 listings showing for the same item. Is this correct? one has a starting price of $1000 and the other listing has a current bid of $10.50 at the time of asking the question. Are they one in the same item or am I mistaken. Thanks a***a (238 • 04:22 pm, Thu, 28 Mar )You are quite correct. I screwed up when listing this (these) items & listed the same item twice. Trade Me will charge me a "mere" $3.00 to end the auction early, BUT I paid $20.00 for the listing to be "Featured". The brooch does not even belong to me, I am selling it for a friend on a paltry commission rate. So I do not wish to LOSE $23.00 by ending my screwed-up erroneous listing. 🙁 phillipjames (8979 • Thursday, 28 March 2024 )HOWEVER I do plan to REPLACE (correct) the images & description in the brooch's listing SOON, & reduce the start bid to $1.00 "reserve" once this achieved. VISITORS with Duty Free BOOZE are presently making this HARD to get done. SORRY for any confusion my screw-up has caused/ ALSO the "Fan shaped" Red enamel brooch was ALREADY SOLD🙁 Seller comment Friday, 29 March 2024
