Description
This listing is for a "TURN-OFF" Cannon Barrel BOXLOCK Percussion Action Pocket Pistol
AGE Circa 1820 -1850's
Higher Quality for being BRITISH MADE
Bears Victorian-era LONDON double-proof marks under the barrel
The "Turn-Off" pistol barrel on a turn-off pistol, where the chamber is filled with gunpowder from the front, & accessed by unscrewing the barrel
The Ball projectile is inserted into the barrel's rear allowing for faster & easier loading & a much tighter fit
The turn-off action became popular during the reign of Queen Anne (1701 -1714) in Flintlock pistols, & continued to be used until mid-Victorian times, even after the change from Flintlock action to Percussion Actions
The boxlock action is a firing mechanism with the lockwork mounted internally, as opposed to being mounted on the side of the weapon
Boxlock actions were common in the 18th & 19th centuries
The action gets its name from the lockwork typically being installed in a box of some sort, usually inline behind the barrel
Most boxlock weapons were flintlock, although some percussion cap & pinfire boxlocks also existed
The popularity of boxlock actions declined rapidly after the emergence of percussion cap & pinfire revolvers in the mid-19th Cent
The Turn-Off barrel would often require a specially-fitted tool to unwind the barrel, but this one was kept well-lubricated so today is easily removed with just two hands
Sadly there is some rusting & deep pitting, but this elegant antique pistol remains in FULL WORKING ORDER and will DISPLAY NICELY in your collection
The action is STRONG and very POSITIVE holding well on both full & half cock positions & the percussion nipple remains in good condition (Often found in utterly munted condition from being abused by former idiot owners)
NO maker details so was likely "Made for the Trade" (Allowing retailers to add their name to the pistol)
NO FIREARMS LICENCE required to bid or own
BUT It MUST remain within your home if you do not hold a current FAL?

Seller added 2 photos Seller comment Thursday, 11 April 2024 Upon purchase and pick up would you do a demonstration of how to use, and a walkthrough of how to maintain, etc? j*************7 (3 • 06:55 pm, Thu, 11 Apr )I would struggle to do-so due to the absence of a lead ball projectile, lack of Blackpowder, lack of percussion caps & Wadd material. Ball projectiles need to be cast, so a bullet mould of correct caliber is required. Also what you ask would require a B Class firearms licence, which I don't have. A couple of useful videos on You Tube = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Efodd2V8EQU and also = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjfGA9EwvVE (This is a Flintlock) SAME principle to LOAD barrel & fire phillipjames (8980 • Thursday, 11 April 2024 )Hi Phillip. What an amazing, very rare little Pistol. Any calibre stamped on barrell?. What a shame about other issues we have discussed.. c*************1 (18 • 10:24 am, Fri, 12 Apr )Thanks for your very kind words for my wee pistol Bruce 🙂 Oddly there is no stamp to advise the caliber?. But my measuring Gizmo says that it is APPROX. 0.4130" or 10.49 mm at the barrel's mouth. And at the REAR after the thread, it measures a bit wider at 11.41mm or 0.4495"I am not expert-enough to work out what that would be in gun-speak "Caliber" 😕 How was the FIT of your Pink Floyd T-Shirt?? phillipjames (8980 • Friday, 12 April 2024 )You welcome. Pink Floyd Tee shirt was great, maybe be a tad bulky. It was 6XL. If you've got a 4XL i am in. The calibre is 41 Cal. Pretty standard for that period and Pistol. The larger calibre at the breech is to facilitate loading. Smaller calibre ensures obturation (sealing). Not too sure about shooting it. Maybe soft load without ball or patch. Wad to keep powder in and ensuring no air gaps. BP and air gaps equals pipe bomb. c*************1 (18 • 01:52 pm, Fri, 12 Apr )Thanks for advising the Caliber Bruce. I certainly WOULD NOT advocate trying to fire a pistol of this age with obvious age-related deterioration, it could create a potential "Darwin Award" candidate (Google it!!) & attempting to fire it would be a serious offence without the correct grade of Firearms Licence. An FAL is required to obtain Gunpowder or Percussion caps here in NZ. Oversize T-Shirts are a FASHION with young folks. Chinese sizing is a PROBLEM I am 3XL NEED a 6XL, I do have size "5XL" phillipjames (8980 • Friday, 12 April 2024 )Cheers. As a very experienced BP shooter I get many staggering questions regarding BP firearms. Many are influenced by shows like Pawn Stars, where absolute dickheads won't buy old firearms without firing them,,??? WTF. A 5 Xl will be OK, can you set it up? c*************1 (18 • 06:29 pm, Fri, 12 Apr )That "Pawn Stars" has a LOT to "answer-for" as you say Bruce. "It's WORTH MORE if you can shoot it"???. 3 generations of OBESITY with barely a brain cell between them. On 1 episode a WW1 German "Butcher Bayonet" came in with a SAW-BACK. The LEAST STUPID one (Rick) needed to "Call-in an "Expert" to check if the EQUSITELY MACHINED Saw-Back was "original?, Or if "Some guy had done it in his garage?" Doh! tells ME all you/I need to know about the KNOWLEDGE of the 3 fat guys starring in "Pawn Stars" phillipjames (8980 • Friday, 12 April 2024 )Sounds like you guyes are "OBESE" 5 XL? Jeeez.... m***********6 (25 • 08:44 pm, Wed, 17 Apr )Sounds to ME like you are "unfamiliar" with Chinese sizes versus "Kiwi Sizing"......that said I am certainly overweight but perhaps not as much as "6XL" may suggest phillipjames (8980 • Wednesday, 17 April 2024 )Also No FAL reqired in NZ for caps or powder. m***********6 (25 • 08:50 pm, Wed, 17 Apr )Thanks for that advice, however, it may be found that certain (very responsible) Gun Stores will NOT sell Percussion Caps or Blackpowder to you if you cannot produce a current Firearms Licence phillipjames (8980 • Wednesday, 17 April 2024 )Photo terrible I agree. n. o not accept the offer also has mbe 1935 etc thank you i****0 (568 • 11:37 am, Fri, 19 Apr )You are welcome :-) phillipjames (8980 • Friday, 19 April 2024 )
