Description
Hikurangi, the story of a coal mining town by Madge Malcolm. Hard covered book of 225 pages and published in 1997.
The contents of the book are in nice condition, the book is full of information and some really neat pics too, the cover is in really nice condition as well. On the first blank page in and on the title page there are some very very light brown marks.
This book tells of the story of Hikurangi as a coal-mining town from 1890 till the last mine closed in 1948. The stories are told by the miners themselves, stories that should not be lost and are a vital part of New Zealand’s history. The author found Hikurangi a town of very caring people. Mining is dangerous work meaning that each man was his brother’s keeper. Mining tragedies brought the whole town together, like when the Ackers boys died in a mine disaster, no one was unaffected.
Hikurangi had between 60 to 70 mines in its heyday, the subsequent decline in mining and sawmilling has seen Hikurangi lose employment. There is only the fish factory now to offer jobs (1997), but that does not affect the sporting enthusiasts. Sport is still as important as it ever was. The stories of the earliest settlers are also told, they had hard lives but as Sam Carter’s diary shows, there was a lively social life too. It wasn’t all work and no play.
