Description
The Old Whaling Days – A History of Sothern New Zealand from 1830 - 1840 by Robert McNab. Hard covered book of 508 pages and was first published in 1913. This one was published in 1975.
The cover is in nice condition other than a small tear at the bottom of the crease where it folds into the front of the book. The contents of the book are in lovely condition. The first couple of pages in has some light foxing.
The Old whaling days is the story of New Zealand’s wildest days, when French and American ships as well as British scoured the coastline for the highly prised sperm whale; when violent crimes went unpunished because there were no laws; when a British sea captain helped Te Rauparaha to slaughter an Akaroa chief and his people.
Robert McNab travelled the world in his search for the letters, newspaper articles and ships’ logs which make this eye-witness account of the most interesting time, but least recorded, period in New Zealand’s history.
The book includes, The Cook Strait, Nga-Motu, Foveaux Strait, Weller’s Whaling Station, rescue of the Harriett’s crew, French & American Whalers & Scientists, Manslaughter Trail, Tariff Disputes, Otago Trade, Chatham Island, Mary & Elizabeth Papers, Mary Mitchell Log, Enderby Records, Watkin’s Journal.
