As you can see from the pictures, this item is a Fairchild Dip Pen with a pencil as well. The nib is a No 6 Leroy W Fairchild and I believe it is about 14ct gold. The pen itself is gold plated and black composite of some sort. Fully extended it is about 16.5cm from nib to the circle on the end and reduces to 9cm in length. The nib is extended by sliding the gold band down the barrel of the pen and the pencil is extended by winding the gold bit on the very end. by the circlet. I would estimate the age to be around 1890's or even earlier. The name Fairchild is engraved on the extended barrel.
