Description
For your consideration are a stunning pair of British Colonial silver salt cellars, which are embossed with deities, characterised by figures of Hindu Gods and Godesses.
Made by the firm of Peter Orr & Sons of Madras (now Chennai) who were considered to be the most important and famous silversmiths/clock makers in Southern India. Peter and his brother Alexander arrived in Madras from Scotland in 1843 and initially started working for George Gordon & Co. before taking over the business in 1849, upon Gordon's retirement.
Orr & Sons reputation was greatly enhanced in 1876 when the Prince of Wales visited India, at which time, they became manufacturing Jewellers, Gold and Silversmiths to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, by special appointment.
This style of silverware is commonly known as SWAMI ware, which originated in Madras during British rule.
The workmanship on these British colonial salt cellars is amazing and they are as collectable as Scottish provincial silver, if not more so. Although a pair, they are not entirely identical as the deities posture and pose, differs slightly.
