Description

Conte and Pencil on Paper.

Frame Measures: 740w x 650h

Art Measures: 340mm x 460mm

An enticing semi-abstract boatyard landscape– with spaces marked by colour and numbers; and reference to this in the top left corner, although this is difficult to decipher completely.

This piece is ex-John Leech gallery, and exceptionally well framed – a thick, heavy frame with the work under “Tru Vue" conservation/UV protected glass.

Each corner of the mat tapers back in the frame toward each corner – the work is placed on the convex background, which further highlights it within the frame.

John Weeks (1888-1965), an artist of immense influence is among one of our nations most celebrated and integral art figures.

Born in Devonshire, Weeks came to New Zealand early in his life – studying at the Elam School of fine Arts 1908 through 1911, and returned to teach at Elam in 1929, having widely travelled while honing his skills in the interim. He even continued to produce during active service in France and the United Kingdom as part of the New Zealand Medical Corps during the First World War. Weeks “was an extremely energetic, enthusiastic and popular teacher of painting until his retirement in January 1954… His influence during this time can be found in the work of Frances Hunt, W. S. Wallis and Louise Henderson... It is also present in artists whom he did not teach directly – the brothers Charles and John Tole, and Peggy Spicer”

Many of his works were destroyed by a campus fire in Elam’s school in 1949 – as many as 200. Today, many of his surviving works are held both privately and publicly – including significant collections proudly held by the Auckland Art Gallery, and Te Papa.

On a more commercial note - Oil works by the artist often achieve between $5000, and $8000 – The International Art Center celebrates “A much admired John Weeks” achieving $21,000 in August 2016.
