Description
Here we have a 100 year old drypoint etching by a significant English artist.
It has its original retailers stamp on the back, Colnaghi & Obach. 144-145-146 Bond St, Mayfair, London. Writen on this is PAYNE'S FARM near Romford Original drypoint by W.P.Robins A.R.E (one of 31 proofs plate destroyed). The Framer J.W.Roberts of Davenport Rd Tauranga also has his stamp on the back.
William Palmer Robins (1882-1959) At the time of doing this work became a member of The Royal Society of Painter Etchers. Served in WW1. Went on to exhibit in Venice, Florance, Paris, Zurich & Los Angeles. Taught art and wrote several books on etching. He was one of the most well regarded etchers of his day.
The etching we have here is one of his sought after earlier works. It has Robins' signature in the right corner and 1916. The etching is 28x13cm overall 44x31cm. There is light foxing barely noticeable on the work but more so on the frames mat. This work is quite striking on the wall, a real step above the average English etching. Well framed behind glass. An art investment
As a side note - look into the middle of the image and you will see something on the fence. Under a good magnifying glass you will see it is the farm cat. For such a tiny detail the cat just oozes character... ha
