Description
TINA by J H Lynch - $1 RESERVE A3 Print (200gsm) 297 x 420 mm (11.7 x 16.5 in) Unframed
Joseph Henry Lynch (28 October 1911 - 16 January 1989) was a British artist, better known under his signature J.H. Lynch. His mass reproduced paintings of sultry women, especially Tina (1964) make him one of the main protagonists of mass market art. Tina, Nymph, Autumn Leaves and Woodland Goddess are some of his best known works.
Many of his prints were sold in the homeware departments of retail chains like Boots and Woolworths in the UK in the 1960s and 1970s. He signed his artworks as J.H. Lynch. It is widely believed that he used the archetypal model of the 1960's, Jean Shrimpton, as the inspiration for his paintings.
Lynch is something of a mystery as very little is known about him. One rumour was that he was actually a woman - a New Zealand nun called Julia Lynch! Another suggests he was a Mexican artist, Jesus Helguera, who paints in a somewhat similar style - but both ideas have been discounted by Mario Klingemann who runs a website dedicated to the artist called jhlynch.org.
