THE ARTIST

Jan Davidsz De Heem was a Dutch painter famed for his Baroque still life's of flowers, opulent dinner tables, and vanitas. Born on April 17, 1606 in Utrecht, Netherlands, he studied under his father, David de Heem the Elder, and later with Balthasar van der Ast and David Bailly. De Heem was considered one of the greatest still life painters of his time, especially known for A Table of Desserts (1640), which combines brilliant local colors within the harmony of a golden brown backdrop.
