About Lauris Edmond, born at Dannevirke in 1924, was a latecomer to literary fame, publishing her first book when she was 51. Ten more collections of poetry followed, plus an autobiography in three volumes: Hot October, Bonfires in the Rain and The Quick World. She also published a novel and wrote radio and stage drama.
A former speech therapist and English teacher, Edmond was a graduate of Waikato, Victoria and Massey Universities. Massey conferred an honorary doctorate of literature on her in 1988. Among her many awards was a Katherine Mansfield Memorial Fellowship in 1981 and the Commonwealth Poetry Prize in 1985. She was made an OBE for services to poetry and literature in 1986. In 1999, she received a lifetime achievement award at the Montana New Zealand Book Awards. Lauris Edmond died in 2000.
