Description
Challenging the Myths: Rethinking New Zealand's Educational History By: Roger Openshaw Greg Lee Howard Lee
Published by Dunmore Publishing Limited 1993 Softcover in good condition, no inscriptions
This book is a readable, provocative and scholarly introduction to the history of New Zealand education from early times to the present, suitable for both undergraduates and graduates.
The authors highlight the way history of education in New Zealand has been conceptualised and written and at the same time they provide chapters which introduce much new primary material. The result is an informed critique of both the bland optimism characteristic of traditional approaches to institutional history, and of recent revisionist attempts to interpret the past solely from a late twentieth century perspective. In particular the authors point to an underlying tension, reflected to some degree in all educational history research, between serving the concerns of contemporary educational critics and attempting to satisfy the more specific disciplinary objectives of social historians.
