Description
This scarce title features 10 years of photography by Ans Westra as she worked among Maori people.
She attended formal occasions, visited people in the country, travelled to Waitangi, and photographed on the streets of various cities.
This selection of candid photography of Maori in daily life on marae, during protests, at work and play represents the best of her work.
It begins with young children and finishes with kaumatua, or elders, and the accompanying text by Katarina Mataira at times uses both Maori and English to set the photograph in context.
There is a three-page introduction by Witi Ihimaera.
Whaiora: The Pursuit of Life with photographs by Ans Westra and text by Katerina Mataira is a 1985 first edition published by Allen & Unwin NZ Ltd in association with the Port Nicholson Press, Wellington, with assistance from the National Art Gallery of New Zaland.
It is a large-format 161-page 25x24cm pictorial card soft cover packed with fascinating retro photographs in very good overall condition.
There are tidy pen names on pages 3 and 5.
