These Science Resource Units have been developed over more than a decade to help New Zealand teachers to achieve the aims and objectives of the New Zealand syllabus for the teaching of science in primary schools. In their trial form, many have been used in Australian schools as well as in New Zealand. This has led to a joint venture with the Curriculum Development Centre, Canberra, to publish the units for both New Zealand and Australian teachers. To meet the needs of Australian teachers, additional material has been incorporated and a small number of changes made to the units.

The units are classified in three broad levels corresponding to the interests and abilities of children as they develop and mature. In general, Level 1 units are for children aged five to seven years; Level 2 units are for children aged seven to nine; and Level 3 units are for children aged nine to eleven. Teachers of children in intermediate schools and less able children in secondary schools should also find them useful.

Each unit is a flexible lesson plan, or a series of plans. Teachers should adapt these to suit the needs of their classes. Two or more units may be combined to give greater depth or wider scope to a study. The units are sequential-Level 2 and 3 units presuppose that children have had related experiences at a lower level.

I would like to thank the many teachers throughout New Zealand who assisted with the writing and the trials of these units, and teachers in Australia, who have used the trial units and prepared the additional material.
