Description

Tangiteroria – Crucible of the Kaipara, missionary impulse and impact, written by Stephen Fordyce and signed and dated by him on the title page. Hard covered 3.7 cm thick book of 536 pages and printed in 2009. The book is in as new condition. ## Have added MORE PICS of inside the book on my silver florin auction ### An English missionary, a French priest and a Maori chief are the protagonists in this illuminating historical drama of conflicting religious beliefs and cultural mores. All three were strong-minded, self-confident, shrewd and intelligent men, but had little else in common. The stage on which their tension-filled encounters played out was the small settlement of Tangiteroria, situated midway between modern-day Dargaville and Whangarei. The bargaining, misunderstandings and hostilities that occurred there during a few short years before and after 1840 were to affect Maori and European settlement in the wider environs of the Kaipara Harbour down to the present. Paramount chief Te Tirarau Kukupa of Te Parawhau, held away in his rohe on behalf of his people. Usually of mild demeanour, he became an awesome antagonist when crossed. A former cannibal who continued to practice polygamy. Paradoxically, the prize of winning this influential chiefs conversion set Wesleyan missionary James Buller and Catholic priest Antoine Garin on a course of conflict.
