Description

Henry Lawson Among Maoris by W.H. Pearson. Hard covered book of 224 pages and printed in 1968. The contents of the book are in reasonably nice condition, there is a biro name at the top of the first blank page in the book. The book has lots of information with some great photos. The dust jacket has a scuff mark on the back and sunning and the cover has some light creases, please see last pic. Henry Lawson’s writings on Australia, town and bush, which helped to create the Australian legends of mateship and toughness are well known. Less is known of his experiences in New Zealand. A story ‘A Daughter of Maoriland’ is based on his experiences teaching at the school in Mangamaunu, just North of Kaikoura on one of his three visits to that country. The story shows a failure in his relations with the Maori community, in particular with one of his pupils – a girl he names August in the story. This book is a study of the reasons for Lawson’s failure with the Maoris. The author’s research led him into many avenues – Lawson’s life and personality, the Australian tradition he represented, the local history of the Maori community, New Zealand policy on Maori education in the 1890’s and the effect which Lawson’s experiences in Mangamaunu had on his later writing Book after book has appeared about Lawson – this is the only one so far to deal specifically with his New Zealand experiences. Missionaries of Civilisation’ The Lawsons at Mangamaunu Mere Jacob and ‘A Daughter of Maoriland’ Lawson’s Aesthetic Crisis Lawson’s Letters from Mangamaunu Lawson’s Visits to New Zealand Glossary of Maori words The book includes ‘They call that man a “White Man” ‘ The reluctant bushman The Ngai-tahu of Kaikoura
