Kaikoura coast, the history, traditions and Maori place names of Kaikoura by W.J. Elvy, written in 1949. Hard covered book of 103 pages with a fold out map at the rear. The dust jacket has a plastic cover over it and the dust jacket has some stains and a couple of little pieces out of it at the top, see last pic. The contents are in quite nice condition really.

This book deals with the present Kaikoura County, from Tirohanga at the north, to the Conway River in the south as at 1950. The Kaikoura coast has an exciting history but a lot of it was lost due to the extermination of the original tribes but the author has done his best to find the threads of information and put them together, he has used information that was collected by earlier investigators pieced out with the information he had been able to gather from local inhabitants and their traditions.

The book includes information on the traditional history of Kaikoura, the Ngai-Tahu conquest, the Te Rauparaha’s Raids and Maori Place names.
