An autobiography by Dr Rowan Nicks, born in New Zealand in 1913 and the first Antipodean to be made an Honorary Member of the Societe Internationale de Chirurgie. After World War II Nicks trained in cardio-thoratic surgery in London, and returned to NZ to help found the Thoracic and Cardiovascular Unit in Auckland. Soon followed his appointment as Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Nicks pioneered many operations for congenital and valvular heart disease and following his retirement continued to teach surgery in many developing countries.
