"The Acheron was sent out from Britain under orders of the Admiralty to make the first full and accurate survey of the coasts and harbours of New Zealand. This survey took place over a four year period, from 1848 to 1851. The shore and shipboard journal and the formal log were both used by the author in the writing of this book. The 95 illustrations in the book follow the course of the voyage out via the Cape of Good Hope and Australia, but relate mainly to the New Zealand survey.
