This fantasy series of ancient China, is written by an English novelist, Ernest Bramah [add surname 'Smith' says Google]. The itinerant story-teller, Kai Lung, goes to jail because the agent, Ming-shu, tells his master, Mandarin Shan Tien, that treason has occurred. Throughout the paperback, Kai Lung relays many tales about dragons and spirits. The Mandarin lets him go free, to wander again, and do his outside cooking, assisted now by the pretty maiden Hwa-Mei. Excerpt, page 61: “’The night thickens, with every indication of a storm,’ remarked Hia pleasantly. ‘Yet that same impending flash of promised lightning tarries somewhat.’ ‘Truly is it written: ‘A gracious woman will cause more strife than twelve armed men can quell,’“ retorted Ning bitterly. ‘Not, perchance if one of them bares his nails?’ Thus she lightly mocked him, but always with a set intent, as a poised dragon-fly sips water yet does not wet his wings.” Paperback measures: 11.3cm x 18cm x 1.6cm. No cigarette. In Birkenhead.
