Mash Tun was founded in Whanganui in 2014, making crackers from spent grain, a by-product of the brewing process. It was producing until 2018, with changes in baking facilities putting the business into hibernation, allowing the then owner time to reassess the next step.
On the tail of the Level 4 COVID-19 lockdown, we approached the owners to buy the business, planning to get it back in operation from a commercial prep kitchen we have for our restaurants. We were to pivot our team & capabilities, thinking the post lockdown economy would see a significant and lasting reduction in our core business. We bounced back better-than-expected, leaving us with the framework of an excellent business but not the time to re-start it.

There’s the opportunity to work with more breweries and brand your products in collaboration. Equally, de-branding may allow you to scale up. The business has significant potential & could be run anywhere in NZ. One appeal for us was the minimal waste impact of the core ingredient being a sustainable by-product, something that increasingly resonates with consumers. The cost of raw goods is very low, and a savvy operator will see very generous profit margins. The business could be run again in artisan setting or it could also be majorly scaled. There is additional potential in Mash Tun Crisps, which were trialled but not taken to market. There is massive opportunity in this area.
