This device measures the moisture content of a variety of materials.

It is most accurate when used on pinus radiata and soft to medium density woods but can also be used for comparative testing on plasterboard. Just test a known dry spot to get a reference then test elsewhere. This is very handy if you're looking at buying a house and want to check for signs of leaky building syndrome.

SOME REASONS TO CHECK FOR MOISTURE CONTENT

• Damp firewood doesn't burn very well. Check it before buying or burning.
• Timber framing must be 18% or less before lining with plasterboard or the Council will fail a pre-line inspection. This is so the plasterboard doesn't 'pop' and ruin the finish as the framing dries out later.
• Furniture makers need wood dry enough so it doesn't twist and warp after being worked into table tops etc.
• Checking your house (or one looking to buy) for potential leaky cladding or wet area (bathrooms) problems.
