We’ve thought long and hard about how to mark this special occasion, and what better way to do that than to turn it over to you, our community, to help us. We considered letting nature run its course and let the billionth listing happen organically, kind of like a lucky dip.

Instead, we thought we’d step it up a notch and give one of our community out there – be it old Reginald, a proud Invercargill septuagenarian and member since 2002, or Samantha, a business owner and entrepreneur from Kaitaia – the chance to be the seller of Trade Me's billionth listing.

Winning this auction means you will auction something off as listing #1000000000, and you'll work with the Trade Me team through our seller account to do it.

There are a couple of terms around what we’ll accept to be our billionth listing, so take note before you bid:

• The listing must live in our General Items category (and not be a car, house, job, or service).
• The listing must not be for something illegal, offensive, stolen, unsafe or otherwise objectionable.
• You must not provide any listing content that we consider misleading, deceptive, defamatory, infringing on a third party’s intellectual property, or otherwise objectionable.
• We have a discretion to refuse to upload content, or offer a particular item or service.
• We’ll review your listing content before putting your listing on Trade Me, and reserve the right to make necessary edits.
• We encourage you to abide by number seven of our values: Don’t be a dick (more here: http://trade.me/values).
