Description
A simple step-down buck converter with a USB socket for the fixed output of 5v.
Takes input from approx 7v to 28v max and provides a regulated 5v output on the USB-A socket connector, with constant output current as much as 1.5 Amps burst to 2A.
My personal testing shows that 1.5A is provided stably, maybe 1.8A but that's pushing it. More than that without heatsinking will fairly quickly send it into thermal shutdown (it restarts when it cools).
Great for providing modest "USB Power" especially from common 12v+ voltage sources such as a car battery, solar panel, old laptop chargers, or a series connection of smaller battery cells.
Protip: My modern Android tablet charges fine from this device, but my ancient HTC Dream refused to take a charge until I soldered an extra 1500uF capacitor across the 5v and gnd output pins of the USB connector. So if you have an irksome/fussy device that won't charge, try adding an extra capacitor to help it along.
CAUTIONS !
- No short circuit / over current protection (see the protected Li-Ion charger boards I sell which you could connect to this) - except that as noted above it appears to have an over temperature shut-down.
- No reverse input polarity protection.
- No over input voltage protection.
- Ensure the output voltage meets your personal tolerance needs before you go connecting your bajillion dollar smarty phone thing to it.
- If you don't own a multimeter and know how to use it, this isn't for you !!
