Description
This auction is for a chess set where the pieces are each designated by a neon cold-cathode or "nixie" tube. The pieces light up and are powered from the board. Supplied fully assembled, with a plug pack.
This is the 3rd generation LaserMad set, as sold by ThinkGeek (product #1616). Google it for more photos, and a YouTube video of a similar set in play.
It was sold in the UK for GBP195 as a kit and GBP495 assembled. We bought it as a kit and the electrical engineer in the family says it isn't suitable for amateurs – it took a LOT of work to assemble it!
Each piece is about 4cm high, 35mm in diameter, and the board is 40cm square.
The pieces have been programmed with a slight variation from the original to make them easier to identify. Bishops are designated with a "+" sign, knights with a capital Omega symbol, along with the Cyrillic symbol ? for castle/rook/tower, k for king and V for Vizier/Queen (looks better than A for bishop and M for knight).
The pieces are undecorated, that is they all have brown bases and look identical when the power is switched off. The board and pieces can be custom painted by the buyer.
Pieces will be carefully packed in styrofoam and well protected for shipping by courier (costs to be advised). Pickup is from Hillcrest, Hamilton.
Please note that shipping and pickup can only be done on the weekend due to work schedules.
