Game Play Like the previous games in the series, Ninja Gaiden III is a hack and slash action-adventure game however it does feature some new game mechanics and received a few changes to enhance features from previous games.

Ryu fights with a sword called a Kunai and various changes have been made to the combat system; the new Kunai Climb feature allows Ryu to climb onto certain walls by using his Kunai, this can be used to attack enemies from above by dropping down on them. Stealth is also an option as Ryu is now able to sneak up on an enemy and kill them with a single strike which does not alert other enemies in the vicinity automatically.

The Reverse Wind Technique from previous games was removed and replaced with a new slide maneuver which the player uses to get through small passages, under obstacles and also as a method of attacking enemies.
