This device is mainly marketed on safety, since your hand doesn't get near the blade, but for me the appeal was speed. Initially using the bare unit, the kindling would sometimes jump out the side, slowing me down, but a shroud made out of a plastic bucket sorted that.

So it's "whack in half, grab one half, whack in half again ... ", etc., and once the space inside the shroud is full, grab the lot with your free hand and drop into your bin and reach for the next billet. You can really get into a rhythm, and before you know it you've got a barrel full of kindling, and still there's time to get back to writing the great NZ novel before supper.

Has a slight surface patina of rust, but I won't have time to clean it as I have so much stuff to list and sell, speaking of which ...
