Description
The Story of New Zealand Jade
Pearce, G L
Collins, Auckland, 1971. Hard Cover. First edition of 1971, 109 pages including four appendices, bibliography and index, 19 colour photographs, 17 b/w drawings by Harry Dansey, three maps.
"Commonly Known as Greenstone" is the sub-title of this geological/ancient history of this ornamental mineral also known as nephrite, and used by the ancient Maori for decorative ornaments, as implements or weapons in the form of mere, or clubs. This rare semi-precious stone is found in only a few relatively restricted areas on the NZ South Island. It is still highly prized and worked by the Maori and is largely protected for them for commercial use.
This is a concise, yet comprehensive, non-technical study of this lustrous mineral which figures so strongly in Maori folk-lore and legend, and today, when it is very popular with tourists. Boards in archival mylar- ex-lib with bare minimum of markings, nice copy
