Who we are:
Awanui Labs is a part of Awanui Group, the largest network of human and veterinary pathology laboratories in New Zealand. At Awanui, we’re proud to be a national network of 25 laboratories, 150 collection centres, and employers of over 2,200 people throughout Aotearoa. Our team of specialist pathologists, scientists, technicians, phlebotomists, couriers, and shared services personnel deliver a world-class service that together collects, analyses, and reports over 7 million patient results annually.

Our region:
Based in the heart of Wellington, our Haematology department at Wellington Hospital is a high-throughput 24/7 laboratory servicing the needs of the greater Wellington region. We perform a wide repertoire of routine and specialist diagnostic tests, supporting the regional Haematology and Oncology Service and several peripheral hospital-based laboratories.

About the role:
An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced supervisor, whose primary responsibility will be to oversee our Coagulation department. This dynamic section provides both routine and specialist diagnostic support for haemostasis and thrombosis for the region, augmenting the work of one of New Zealand’s Haemophilia centres. Various assays are employed for monitoring and investigation including clotting time, chemiluminescence, immunoturbidimetric, chromogenic and platelet aggregometry methodology.

With a team of 20-25 staff members, you will work in partnership with the Head of Department to manage administrative, technical and scientific work. Your ability to lead and empower people is essential to this role to ensure the continued development of the department and its strong progressive team.

This is a permanent, full-time position working 80 hours per fortnight.

You will be expected to:
  • Be a source of expert technical and scientific advice for Coagulation matters to haematologists, scientists in the network, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Deliver training, education and mentoring to staff, promoting an open, collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Lead, plan and develop the department to ensure the continued delivery of a high quality service.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, policy setting and implementation for the department
  • Assist in the development of appropriate methodology to the laboratory
  • Ensure efficient stock control and effective use of consumables

To succeed in this role you will:
  • Be registered (or eligible to be registered) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with the Medical Science Council, NZ
  • Have a passion for Coagulation, as well as technical expertise in all aspects of Haematology
  • Have previous experience in an operational management role in Haematology
  • Act as a professional role model to staff, actively demonstrating integrity, ownership and leadership in all aspects of the role
  • Be expected to keep the service abreast of best practice and current scientific/clinical opinion in this rapidly changing field
  • Have excellent IT skills
  • Be an analytical thinker, with the ability to work autonomously performing research, method validation procedures, critical appraisal, data analysis and project supervision.
  • Demonstrate strong prioritisation, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Be flexible in working shifts across the 24/7 roster and on-call.

What’s in it for you:
You will be joining a friendly, high performing, and forward-thinking team environment. Our laboratory is highly automated and technically advanced, already delivering an outstanding service for patients and healthcare professionals. As part of the Haematology management team, you will have the autonomy and support to contribute to the success of the department at a higher level and to connect and collaborate with stakeholders from all laboratories in New Zealand.

If this team sounds like the right fit for you, then we would love to hear from you.
