Car and safety technology has come a long way in the last 10 years. Features that were once limited to flash European luxury sedans are now commonplace. Here are some you should look for in any new car.

• Anti-skid braking (ABS) - this uses a computer to prevent your brakes skidding.
• Airbags - ideally double front airbags and side curtain airbags for all. Most cars come with front airbags but side curtain airbags seriously improve survivability in two car collisions.
• Crash test rating - ANCAP (or equivalent) of at least 3 stars, preferably 4.
• Electronic Stability Control - these use sensors to detect loss of control and correct it.
• Electronic braking distribution - similar to ABS, this optimises braking effect across the four wheels.
