Our Mt Albert cousin, who buys expensive clothes, bought this book, read twice. From 5 years old, Grace Coddington, on the Isle of Anglesey, Wales, would save up her 2/6 pence and buy ‘Vogue’ magazine. She ran away at 17, to London to work in the fashion industry. She now works in USA. When Grace was in her mid 20s, and seven months pregnant, she tried to park her car at her bedsit near a London football stadium. She tooted, and angry football fans tipped her car over. She lost the baby, and could not have any more children. Book has many coloured photos, diagrams, and her own sketches of famous and then unknown designers, models, photographers, hairstylists, and make-up artists. Excerpt, page 30: “During the years after I turned thirteen, I spent even more time studying ‘Vogue’, since my sister left home to get married, and I inherited the sophisticated privacy of her room. It was very much hers when she lived with us: I wasn’t even allowed through the door without an invitation. So the first thing I did was redecorate. She had painted it yellow. I painted it pink. Or was it the other way around? My mother never questioned my sister getting married so young—she was only eighteen—because her obsession was for us girls to find husbands.” Measurements: 19cm x 24cm x 4cm. No cigarette. In Birkenhead.
