Tips for finding your dream whare on Trade Me Property

Smart ways to laser focus your property search

7 December 2023

The day has come, you're finally in a position to buy your own whare (house) and you want to beat the competition. Understanding every tool and feature on Trade Me Property will help you get there.

The first thing you’ll want to do is download the Trade Me app for iOS or Android. There are plenty of features there to help you streamline your experience in a number of ways. Let’s get into them.

Use Trade Me Property’s expanded property search filters

When you refine your property search on your phone or laptop, you can refine by location or locations, type of property, number of bedrooms and bathrooms and also, you can refine your property search by property features such as:

  • Garage
  • Ensuite bathroom
  • Study
  • Separate toilet

Plus you can receive notifications of new properties that match your property search filters if you save your property search.

Map Search on the go

If you’re at an open home and discovering a new neighbourhood, this feature will show you other open homes or similar properties nearby so you can do your research. You can then add open home times and addresses to your calendar to make next weekend’s plans even easier.

Create multiple Watchlist groups

Exclusive to the app, you can now create customised and multiple Watchlist groups. This is handy if you’re tossing up between more than one type of property. For example, an apartment vs. a townhouse. You can keep all of the townhouses in one folder and all of the apartments in another. That way you can also separate your property Watchlists from other Watchlists you’ve made across Trade Me.

Make sure you’re opted in to Trade Me Property’s ‘personalised recommendations’ emails to receive notifications on your Watchlisted properties like when they have dropped in price.

Order your pre-purchase building inspection via Inzpec

If you’re serious about a property and you’re close to putting an offer in, on the Trade Me Property listing (on any device), you’ll spot the 'Building Inspection' heading in the 'Before you buy' section below the Local Schools information, where available.

There you can click on 'Learn more' to get an instant quote, and with only a few clicks you can easily book an inspection via our building inspections partner, Inzpec, with an approved inspector in your area.

What’s more, you’ll get 10% off the inspection report price if you’ve come through to Inzpec via Trade Me Property.

(Available in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Wellington (including Kāpiti Coast) and Canterbury).

More information on schools

You can access all the relevant school zone information for residential property listings on Trade Me Property. Scroll to the listing, click ‘show all schools’ and you’ll get a list of in zone, out of zone and unzoned schools.

Crucial information for families and for investors who might be renting to family tenants.

More help on your journey

If you’re getting ready to put in an offer on a home, or you just want to dive deeper in your research of a property, go to the listing and below the Property Insights heading, you’ll find:

We’ll also help you with another key step. At the bottom of the Trade Me Property listing page you’ll see 'House Insurance'. This will calculate the cost of your home and contents insurance with Trade Me Insurance. If you’re already a Trade Me member, you’ll receive 15% on your premium!
