Message board tweaks

Back in October 2009, we made some changes to the Trade Me message board including a comprehensive revamp of the way the message board looked, and the addition of a search function. Now, a couple of years later, we are making some further changes to this busy part of the site where more than 25,000 messages are posted every single day.

The main changes we are making today and why are as follows:

- Restricting message board access and activity to members who are logged-in: this reflects the fact the message board is there for the Trade Me community, not every man and his dog. There is an element of ‘back to the future’ about this change as this is how the message board originally operated;

- Automatically removing threads in 'Opinion & Politics' and 'General discussion' that have not had new posts added in the past 45 days: these categories often fill up quickly with large volumes of threads that are topical at a particular time, and then quickly lose relevance and are seldom accessed. This process won’t happen in a split second, but over the next day or so as the database updates. Note that threads in all the other categories that have not had a new post added within the past year are automatically removed;

- Updating the Trade Me Message Board policy: providing some more guidance as to what is acceptable and what is not. You can view the tweaked message board policy here.
