Photos: General marketplace photo guidelines

Yesterday we announced a new photo policy, however today we’ve updated this to a set of guidelines after listening to the feedback we received from sellers.

We know our buyers love great product photos. In fact a good, clear photo of a product is the single most important way to attract a buyer on Trade Me. For this reason we’ve developed some guidelines that we encourage sellers to follow in order to maximise your sales in Trade Me’s general marketplace.

We encourage our sellers to follow these guidelines when uploading photos of your products in Trade Me’s general marketplace:

- You should not super impose information on your photos for the purposes of marketing, for example: text, borders or logos.
- Your uploaded photos should be at least 600 pixels in length and 800 pixels in width. Taking a photo with your digital camera or mobile phone should easily exceed this minimum requirement.
- Each photo can be up to 10 MB in file size. This will allow you to showcase your products in all their glorious detail and will allow your buyers to zoom in on your product. We know buyers love large photos, and our research shows that the bigger the photo the better it will perform.
- If you have further information about your product, such as free shipping or the size of an item of clothing, you should include this detail in the description or shipping details of the item, rather than overlaying text onto your photos. This ensures a buyer knows exactly where to look when evaluating your products.
- Small watermarks, no more than roughly 5% of the image size, can be used to help protect your photos from being taken and used by others. Watermarks should not be used for marketing purposes though, as it can distract buyers from evaluating your products.

As always, we expect you to use common sense when you upload photos and to not upload anything that’s offensive to others. Trade Me reserves the right to remove photos that we or our community don’t think are appropriate.
