Changes to our Privacy Policy - have your say

Here at Trade Me HQ we’re planning some changes to our Privacy Policy to better explain how we handle information about you that we collect, store and use. Your feedback on these changes is important to us, so we’re giving you the opportunity to discuss them on our Message boards before they come into effect on 4 May.

Here is a summary of areas we’re proposing to change:

Listing content
We’ve added a section that clarifies the way Trade Me handles different types of information that you upload. When we collect personally identifiable information, such as your name, date of birth or contact details, we protect this information very carefully. However, when you write listing content and upload images, or receive feedback from other members, we publish this for you on the site. As the content is then publicly available, it may appear elsewhere on the internet, or be accessed by developers who have access to our API. Occasionally Trade Me will use this listing content to enrich our other services, such as using vehicle images to enhance MotorWeb’s vehicle information reports, or displaying your listings to members in other advertising. The proposed change we’re making is below.

a. When you create a listing, we make certain information publicly available (for example, the listing description, images, your user name and feedback score and in certain cases your contact details). We refer to this broadly as listing content. Listing content varies depending on the type of listing, and the category. This section of the policy explains what we and others do with listing content.

b. Listing content becomes public when you publish it using our Service. Once you publish it, listing content becomes available via the internet, including to users of our API. Listing content may appear in applications and on other websites. Users of our API must agree to our API terms and conditions.

c. We retain all listing content after listings have expired. Listing content may also persist elsewhere when third parties access and cache listings while they are live. For example, Google do this when they index the web for searching and so old listings may survive in Google searches for a period of time.

d. In certain cases we have commercial arrangements with third parties to display or use listing content. We also use some listing content to enrich our other Services (for example, we use vehicle images to enhance our MotorWeb VIR).

Managing your personal information
We will be updating our policy to clarify that you can access and correct your personal information at any time. You can also request that we delete your personal information once you've closed your account. We consider each request for deletion on a case-by-case basis, taking into account our legal obligations to retain certain information.

Tradevine by Trade Me – multichannel e-commerce
Tradevine allows members to integrate their inventory across different channels and manage their sales and payments. A new section in the policy will replace Tradevine’s privacy policy so that all relevant privacy information is in one place.

Crazy Egg – real life user testing
We're keen to use a service provided by a company called Crazy Egg which provides insight into the ways members interact with particular web pages. We’ll use the reports they generate to see how members interact with different features or content on our pages to deliver an even better user experience. Crazy Egg collect anonymous information about you which is detailed in their privacy policy. You can opt-out of their service by following these instructions.

How we communicate changes to our policy
We want to be as upfront as possible about privacy so we will be updating our policy to explain how we will communicate policy changes to you. We’ll usually communicate all changes to you by site announcement, giving you at least two weeks’ notice to review the changes. As our business moves quickly, occasionally we may have to make urgent changes with a shorter notice period. For significant changes, we may provide you with an opportunity to give feedback on our Message board and we’ll take that feedback into consideration. We may also notify you directly via email if we think any changes will materially affect you.

To provide feedback, please contribute to our Message board thread or drop us a line.
