A tweak to our privacy policy

We’re making a couple of tweaks to our privacy policy in light of some awesome new services Trade Me is offering.

Shipping:

Starting this month, some of our sellers will be able to book a courier on Trade Me when they have sold an item. This means a courier will be able to pick up your sold item from your preferred location and deliver it to the buyer. This will be available on the desktop site only, from ‘Sold items’ on your My Trade Me page. We’ll roll this out to all sellers in early November. We’ll also be making subsequent releases on our iPhone and Android apps as well as My Products.

To facilitate this process, we use a third party, Temando, to display quotes from our couriers. When you place a booking for a courier, we pass name and address details to Temando, who passes it on to couriers, who then deliver your items. Temando anonymise any personal information that they hold regularly, and only retain it for auditing and reconciliation (for example, if a buyer disputes that a package was delivered).

Marketing:

Trade Me is also keen to send more relevant emails to you, more efficiently. To do this, we’re using third party software, called Marketo, to provide marketing automation services. They’ll reduce the heavy lifting we do in contacting you and ensure we only send you content you’re interested in.

How it fits under our policy:

Use of these new services fit within our existing privacy policy at 1.g, where we state:

“Where Trade Me uses third parties to undertake services, we may provide those third parties with some of your information if it is required to fulfil those services. For example, we use third parties to send you letters for address verification, or to conduct research for us to ensure the Services we provide you are relevant and personalised to your interests. We also use third party software (such as customer relationship management and accounting software) that holds your information, sometimes overseas. We require any third party to undertake strict precautions to protect your information against unauthorised use or disclosure."

However, we’ll be adding to that clause, to specifically refer to these types of services as examples, and to ensure we’re being as upfront and transparent about what we’re doing. These changes come into effect on 2 November 2015. As always, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to drop us a line.
