Some tweaks to our privacy policy

The below changes will come into effect on 31 May 2016. If you have any questions about them, please drop us a line.

Access to the Motor Vehicle Register via section 241 of the Land Transport Act 1998

We’re making a change to our privacy policy to be transparent and upfront about what information we may access to keep our members safe.

After review by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, Ombudsmen and Police, we received authorisation from the New Zealand Transport Agency to access the Motor Vehicle Register in February 2016.

We’ll only access the register for fraud prevention purposes. This involves checking the name and address of a vehicle’s owner if we have concerns about a listing on Trade Me Motors. This information will only be used to ensure ownership of a vehicle matches the seller’s Trade Me account.

If you’d like to opt out of the Motor Vehicle Register, please head to this page.

Fraudulent and suspicious transactions

We’re also making a change to clarify what actions we can take to investigate suspicious transactions. If your card or bank account is involved in a suspicious transaction, we may follow up with you to check that you’ve authorised the transaction.

To do this we may share information about what was bought and about other members who we believe may be involved. If the transaction is suspicious, we may need to provide the transaction details to your bank, so they’re able to thoroughly investigate, or provide a chargeback to you if necessary.

New Google customised advertising services

You may recall our site announcement last year updating you on a new type of customised advertising we deliver via our data management platform. You can opt in or out of that customised advertising from your ‘Ad options & your info’ page.

We’re keen to continue our work to provide you with the most relevant advertising content, by sharing the same anonymised information through Krux with a Google data management platform. You can still opt out in the same way as before.

As always, we never share any personally identifiable information with advertisers.
